With a number of Xtal Focus Systems now installed in Germany, it is not surprising that UBIFrance, the French agency for international business developement in Germany, was curious to find out more about the system and the company.

Xtal Focus is, as UBIFrance puts it, “a simplified process for protein crystallization.” It’s success is due to the modularity of the system and the ability to be customized to suit each laboratory’s needs.
Two additional systems are in the process of being installed in Germany each with the capability of imaging 200 plates per day and each storing in excess of 500 SBS Microplates. These installations also take the Protein Crystallization experiment a step further, the system is fully automated to assist in the design of the experiments, monitor the location of the plates in the laboratory, control ingredients levels and create worklists for dropsetters/liquid handlers as well as other processes in the Laboratory.
Italy will see the installations of 2 equally impressive systems in January.

A SudOuest reporter spent some time with Christophe Ranger, to discuss Explora Nova joining the Neurocampus at Bordeaux. To be precise, Explora Nova is situated right next to Labex Brain, the Neuroscience laboratory headed up by Daniel Choquet.
The site of this office was intended, not only to concentrate on Neuroscience but to facilitate the ongoing projects with the likes of Alpha Route des Lasers and LOMA, to mention a few.

UPMC (University Pierre et Marie-Curie) imaging platform organized a workshop concentrating on imaging and 3D analysis held at ICM (Institut du Cerveau et de la Moelle) in Paris on 22 & 23 September 2011. Explora Nova was present alongside Zeiss to help demonstrate their innovative solutions for imaging and stereology in collaboration with Vyvyan Howard, who was also present to demonstrate the value of stereological methods in 3D analysis.
This was a great success and much appreciation goes to UPMC and ICM for hosting this informative event.

While continuing its growth in the industry, photonics is playing an increasingly strategic role in the health sector. It opens up new avenues for progress in diagnosis, therapy, imaging and biomaterials.
Some Aquitaine photonics companies have positioned themselves in this area and have already proven their skills. They were able to join the regional laboratories, internationally known for developing many innovations. Aware of the stakes, Aquitaine has also been able to establish platforms for development and transfer of specific technologies, through which new applications for photonics and health have been possible.
120 participants, thirty Aquitaine speakers in the sector – practitioners, users and researchers, business leaders, leaders of technology platforms, laboratories and institutes – working in diagnosis, therapy, imaging and biomaterials have made this day, 17 June, in Bordeaux a great success for the newly appointed Route des Lasers cluster company project.
RAMC 2011 was held Sunday 11 – Wednesday 14 September 2011
Venue: Le Bischenberg Conference Centre near Strasbourg France
RAMC is a meeting which aims to identify the latest developments in protein crystallization and provide practical insights to improve methodologies. During the meeting there were lectures, poster sessions, discussion groups, commercial exhibitions and plenty of time for informal interaction.
A successful meeting was had and a special thank you to those that made it happen and to CNRS – Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (Strasbourg) for allowing us to demonstrate using their Xtal Focus system.
